At Hartley and Son Ltd we have a proud reputation for helping our clients create a natural, healthy and sustainable environment within which to live, work and play. With over 35 years as Master Builders delivering education, craftsmanship and technical expertise in the building industry we have been involved in some remarkable projects.

Our Project Portfolio demonstrates our capability of delivering a whole range of projects, including listed building restorations, renovations, and extensions. So from new build developments in areas of outstanding natural beauty to stately castles and specialist joinery in public city centre buildings, we continually provide the same high level of service and attention to detail throughout. As well as offering comprehensive risk management with detailed cost breakdown for all projects we provide a consultancy service for self-builders and skill development courses for those in the trade.

The Partnership Approach

When commissioned for a project we like to involve all stakeholders to make them feel part of the project, in our experience this is the best way to ensure success. In most cases this simply involves listening to a private client and their Architect and relaying the vision to our team, but for listed buildings or communal projects this can also mean canvassing the views of a much wider audience.

We call this the ‘Partnership Approach’ to construction and in the past we have even extended it to allow those with a keen interest in assisting our team to take a more active role (subject to health and safety and site restrictions). This might involve working with our skilled plasterers on lime plastering internal walls or assisting the timber framers to erect the structure, and is particularly suitable for the construction of community buildings or projects in which members are to be encouraged to take ownership of the building once complete.

One key part of our team is the workshop of Master Cabinet-Maker Dylan Hartley. For over 40 years Dylan built, restored, and renovated buildings across England and Wales with Hartley and Son Ltd and is now returned to his workshop to deliver world-class Architectural Joinery. Along with renowned church furnisher Aidan Hart, Dylan is a key part of our company working with quality craftsman to deliver exceptional properties. You can keep up to date with the latest news from his Madeley workshop at Dylan

Looking After What’s Good

We believe that every business has a responsibility to look after what’s good, and we’re no different – we call this “business with a conscience”. By delivering our projects with a keen eye on environmental, financial, and human sustainability you can be sure we’re doing our bit. The ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ mantra is well embedded in the backbone of our operations but we are continually looking to do more.

A key part of our company is our partnership with the Lost Boys Network and Jobcentre Plus to bring new skills, confidence, and work experience to the young people of neighbourhoods and communities surrounding each project.

We commit to ensuring every one of our building projects provide opportunities for individuals with low skills, experience, or self-esteem to shadow a skilled tradesman whilst being closely coached, set targets, given regular feedback and offered a CV-boosting reference upon completion.

What’s the end result? Young people with new skills and enhanced job prospects; community ownership of new buildings; deeper relationships between the young people and community youth teams; project buy-in from the congregation; better understanding of the one’s community; and opened doors for invitations to future events.
